How to teach English in Cambodia in 2026

Cambodia is the easiest of the three countries to get into: a degree isn't legally required, paperwork is light and many teachers find a job within weeks of arriving. Pay is lower at language centres, so choose your school carefully.

Requirements to teach English in Cambodia

  • A degree is not legally required, but better-paying schools often ask for one.
  • A TEFL certificate is expected by reputable schools — 120 hours is the usual standard.
  • A police check and your degree (if you have one) may be requested by the school, even though the visa itself needs little paperwork.

How much do English teachers earn in Cambodia?

School typeTypical monthly pay (2025–2026)
Public schoolsUS$600–900
Language centresUS$800–1,200
International schoolsUS$1,500–2,500+

The US dollar is widely used alongside the riel. A one-bedroom apartment in Phnom Penh is typically US$200–600 a month. Split shifts are common at language centres.

The legal route: E-class visa and work permit

  1. Arrive on an E-class (ordinary) visa, not a tourist (T) visa — tourist visas can't be extended for work.
  2. Find a job. Many teachers land one in person within a few weeks.
  3. Extend your E-class visa for 6 or 12 months.
  4. Get a work permit through the online foreign workers system, usually with your employer's help. The permit and visa extension together typically cost about US$500–550 a year.

Red flag: "You don't need a work permit, just come on a tourist visa." That means working illegally — and if something goes wrong, you carry the risk.

Where to find teaching jobs in Cambodia

  • Walk-ins — still one of the most effective methods. Dress smartly and bring printed CVs.
  • Facebook groups — search "teaching jobs Phnom Penh".
  • Dave's ESL Café and ESLbase — international job boards.
  • School websites — international schools often post only on their own site.

Hiring is rolling and year-round at language centres.

How much money to bring

A buffer of about US$1,500–2,000 covers rent, food, transport, your visa extension and work permit while you wait for your first salary.
