What each country expects
| Country | TEFL | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Vietnam | Effectively required | A 120-hour TEFL is expected for the work permit, alongside a degree. |
| Thailand | Strongly preferred | Good government and private schools ask for one; it also helps with permission to teach. |
| Cambodia | Big advantage | Not legally required, but better-paying schools ask for it — especially if you don't have a degree. |

What counts: the 120-hour standard
Schools and immigration offices generally look for at least 120 hours. TEFL, TESOL and CELTA all count; CELTA is the most recognised and the most expensive. Make sure your certificate shows the number of hours, the provider and the date, and that the provider is accredited by an independent body.
Online vs in-person
- Online 120-hour course — cheapest and flexible; fine for most school jobs in the region. Choose one with a tutor who marks your assignments.
- In-person course in Thailand or Vietnam — more expensive, but includes real teaching practice with local students and often job help afterwards.
- Combined — online theory plus a short observed teaching practicum: a good middle ground.
How not to overpay
- Ignore "Level 5" upsells unless a specific employer asks for it.
- Check reviews from teachers who actually got jobs in the country you want.
- Beware of courses bundled with "guaranteed jobs" — read what the guarantee really means.
- Keep the original certificate safe: for Vietnam it will likely need legalising.
Frequently asked questions
Is an online TEFL accepted in Thailand?
Usually yes. Most schools accept a 120-hour online TEFL from an accredited provider. Some top schools prefer courses with observed teaching practice or a CELTA.
Do I need a TEFL for Vietnam?
Effectively yes. A 120-hour TEFL is expected for the work permit, together with a bachelor's degree and a background check.
Is TEFL or CELTA better?
CELTA is the most recognised and includes observed teaching, but costs much more. For most school jobs in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia a good 120-hour TEFL is enough.
Can I get a teaching job in Cambodia with just a TEFL?
Yes, many teachers do. A degree isn't legally required in Cambodia, and a TEFL makes you much more competitive.
