Teaching English in Southeast Asia as a non-native speaker

Thousands of teachers from the Philippines, Europe, Africa and South America teach in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. It's absolutely possible — here's where your chances are best and how to stand out.

Where your chances are best

  • Cambodia — the most open market. Schools hire on English level, experience and attitude.
  • Thailand — many government, private and bilingual schools hire non-native teachers, often for maths, science or primary classes as well as English. Pay can be lower at some schools.
  • Vietnam — possible, especially at public school programmes and smaller centres, but some big language-centre chains prefer certain passports and the work permit rules are stricter.

Prove your English level

Many schools ask non-native speakers for an English test score. TOEIC and IELTS are the most common. A high score on your CV removes doubt before the interview even starts — put it right at the top.

How to stand out

  • Lead with your teaching skills: experience, a TEFL, and a great demo lesson. See our interview and demo lesson guide.
  • Teach a subject: science, maths or computing in English opens doors at bilingual and international programmes.
  • Show your accent is clear with a short intro video linked from your CV.
  • Apply directly to schools as well as through job boards — schools often care less about passports than some agencies do.

The same rules apply to everyone: you need a proper work visa and work permit through your employer. Be wary of offers that pay non-native teachers less and skip the paperwork — that combination is a red flag. Use our contract checklist before signing.

Frequently asked questions

Can non-native speakers teach English in Thailand?

Yes. Many Thai schools hire non-native teachers with strong English, a degree and ideally a TEFL. Some schools ask for an English test score such as TOEIC or IELTS.

Which Southeast Asian country is best for non-native English teachers?

Cambodia is the most open market, followed by Thailand. Vietnam is possible but some large language centres prefer certain passports.

Do non-native teachers earn less?

Sometimes, especially at schools that market 'native speakers'. Strong qualifications, a subject specialism and a great demo lesson help close the gap.

Which English test should I take?

TOEIC and IELTS are the most widely recognised by schools in the region. Put your score at the top of your CV.
